Wintering in Vermont

March 2, 2012 · 13 comments

The birds were having a riot outside my window in the snow yesterday morning. There were a couple of new birds and the Juncos, who I haven’t seen all winter, were out in force. Okay, I’ve seen one or two Juncos but there were many, many here yesterday. Plus a bird my Aunt assures me is a goldfinch, although I wouldn’t have thunk it. However Aunti Jude is a bird expert so I’m going to take her word for it (After I double check in my bird book.)

It’s not that I doubt you AJ, it’s just a matter of wanting to be sure and then I will remember. And there it is – an immature American Goldfinch. I knew you’d be right!

By the way, there were some larger birds, mainly Blue Jays, but I didn’t get them because they were all on the ground under the feeders most of the time. I’d get up to snap a picture and they’d fly away. But you’ve seen them already anyway.

Anywho, here we go:

I know I am completely late to the party here but I love the pictures. I live in Arizona, and while we have a lot of birds, we have no snow here southeast of Phoenix. I love the pics of the birds in the snow. Thank you so much for sharing. :)

Oh Kim – you live in HOT country! I think it’s great there in the winter, but I don’t think I could survive the summers!

Pretty photos! I’m not sure if the goldfinch is immature or just in his winter plumage. They don’t get their full yellow until late spring. I love the nuthatch, though. They’re so upside-downy. :) Also, very nice stuffie sighting. Rare, indeed.

Wow, Delia, you know so much more than me! I love the birds but I don’t know very much about them! Thanks for setting me straight. (No, I don’t mind, I like learning.)

Love the birds. When my sunroom gets finished (a year later than it should have been finished!) I’ll have a spot to put a bird feeder and be able to see it.

About the short story – how soon do you need feedback. I’m making loads of comments and it would be easier to just print and send hard copy, I think. I could format comments differently, but I’ve got a Mac and formatting doesn’t always remain when going to a not-Mac. It’s really good, but we can make it better! stronger! faster! or something like that. ;)

Hey Bear, If you’d like to print and send that would be okay with me. I’ll send you my address either on FB or email. S’allright? s’allright.

I love the photos, Kate. Especially the shy bird. That’s a great shot.

Great variety! Yay woodpeckers, I love them. Also, very funny with that last pic. THAT happens to my camera too.

Yep, looks about like “my” goldfinches, though I have the lesser ones out here in CA! And birds mean Spring’s coming. Yay!

Thanks Mary Stella, Just one of the things I do to distract myself from what I should be doing!
