Do you remember when it first started to snow and I was enraptured? I even posted pictures.
Well it snowed again and I’m no longer happy.
I live near the top of a steep hill. Today I slid down the hill, bumping against the snow banks on the hill side while praying I wouldn’t slide off the tree and cliff side. At one point I was sliding right (toward the cliff) with the steering wheel locked all the way left – which of course meant nothing because I was sliding) and my daughter asked, “Mom what’s that squealing noise?”
I didn’t say, my brain, or the world trying to invert itself while I try and keep it from doing so. I said, “See how we are going straight (I didn’t want her to notice we were actually sliding slightly right – toward the trees and cliff) but I have the wheel turned all the way left? That’s what’s squealing.” She kept quiet after that.
Shortly there after we hit some ruts in the road (from the frozen mud under the snow) and I got my wheels into the ruts and we went a fair way with the ruts keeping us on the road. I’d been swearing at the mud the day before, today I was thanking the almighty mud gods for it.
I am so ready for summer. We don’t really GET spring here, which is too bad, but I’ll take summer as second best until Fall hits.

Given a choice between rain and snow, I’ll take rain. Snow generally comes with ice. I hate snow and ice. And then, there is the driving, such as your lovely little story here.
Given a real choice, I opt for sun and heat, even the rather extremely humid heat in the hell we call August here. Altho’, dry heat would be even the best. And not only do we get thunder and lightning when it rains here (I love that), but the rain doesn’t last for days. It just buckets down for an hour or four, straight down (not that diagonal shit like in the PNW), and then it’s over and the sun comes out.
Snow — no.
Ugh you reminded me of why I’ve resisted getting a car again all these years. I HAAAATED driving in winter.
Okay, I will stop complaining about the rain now. Or better yet, invite you and Megan to come and stay with me until your horrid “spring” weather melts.
Deargawd you two, be careful!
I used to live in the rain, Julie! (Vancouver, BC). And I think I’ll take mud season over monsoon season!
Kate-I’m totally with you! At 5:30 this morning I got the call that the schools were closing. Right now, there is thunder, lightning, and hail. Are the frogs coming next?! When Spring really arrives, I am going to burn my winter coat in celebration. I am that sick of wearing it!
We also live in a hilly area, and my van is just crap in any kind of wintry precipitation. I’ve white-knuckled it too many times now to even attempt to drive in anything but rain. Stay warm and safe!
