Wednesday Woe With Wanda Worstwagger – The Job Delimma

in Entertaining nonsense and profound thought

Dear Wanda,

I’ve been job hunting for a while now and feel I must take any job that is offered to me. Things are looking up and it seems as though I’ll get two offers. The problem is that the job I want least is likely to be the job that offers me a position first. How long can I keep them on the hook while waiting for job number two?

Need to eat but don’t want to be stuck in a job I don’t like.

Dear Hungry,

This is a sticky situation. At some point job #1 will insist on an answer and you must make a decision. However, no one wants an unhappy employee, or one that’s constantly looking elsewhere. The honorable thing to do would be to tell job one that you are waiting on an offer from job 2. They will likely hire someone else and if job 2 doesn’t come through you’ll be back to square one. The human thing to do would be to keep job 1 until you feel you’ll be leaving the in the lurch and then make a decision if job two hasn’t come through with an offer. But you must decide how long you are willing to wait for job two, how much a pickle job one will be in if you don’t show up, and how you feel about burning your bridges. Will job one ever consider you for a position again? Not likely. So choose wisely.

Dear Readers,

What do you think? How much self interest do you think a new employer tolerates in a prospective employee?
