Review: Maybe This Time by Jennifer Crusie

First let me just say – Blast you Jennifer Crusie for writing a book that kept me up until one am on a work night. Okay now that’s off my chest I can continue. And if you hear me snoring just tiptoe quietly out of the room. I need my sleep.

For starters let me tell you that Maybe This Time is Crusie’s take on The Turn of the Screw. A little more modern, and set in America but the basics are there. Remote house, governess, ghosts – you get the picture.

I don’t get a lot of time to read – The two many kids problem – but this weekend I had a few moments and finally started to read MTT. Then I was unfortunately interrupted by Halloween. That’s the problem with living in the country gotta take the kids out in the car. It takes forever.

We eventually got home. The kids went to bed and I thought I’d read a few more pages. At Ten fifteen I told myself fifteen more minutes. When I looked up again it was Eleven twenty-two, but I only had two more paragraphs to read in the chapter – and that’s not unreasonable, right? Finishing the chapter. The last time I looked up I had finished the book at it was One AM. Ho boy.

I was very cranky the next day.

I don’t have any deep analysis of the plot or character. I’m not exactly good at that stuff. I can tell you that MTT  is Classic Crusie x 10. The plot goes non-stop, the characters are complex and compelling. And the ending is very satisfying. So if you haven’t read it – go out and get it. It’s a keeper.

MTT cost me a night’s sleep, too, but it was worth it.
