As you know I’m Kickstarting Glimmer Girls. I thought you might like some background on the town of Mabble.
This is my collage of Mabble:
When I was in my early twenties I went to England to visit my English Grandparents. Enid and Sandy Sanderson were actually my step-grandparents, but they never treated me as such, in fact they treated me much better than my real father’s parents did. I’ll tell you that story another time.
They took me on a driving tour of England. I had such a good time. We stayed in Bed and Breakfasts, some quite swank, other’s not much more than converted barns or add on rooms at farmhouses. Didn’t matter. We loved them all. My Nana (Enid) didn’t like for me to pay everything, but I knew she had a limited budget and didn’t want to be a burden to them. So we started sneaking around behind each other’s back. I’d track down the Lady of the house – it always was a woman – and I’d pay her before we’d even stayed the night, just so my Nan wouldn’t get there before me. We’d argue in the checkout lane about who was going to pay for groceries. We had a lovely time. It was lovely, not stressful at all because we both knew how much we loved each other, and the bickering! And where ever we went the people we left behind were smiling. Our bickering was very civilized. Can you tell how much I miss my Nana?
Anyway, to the point! One of the places we visited was Clovelly, a little village perched on the side of a steep hill leading down to a bay. When I started writing about Mabble, the main location in Glimmer Girls, Clovelly is the place that came to mind. Mabble is on the east coast of the USA, not the west coast of England. And Mabble’s main street is wide enough to drive on – and doesn’t have steps in it! But it was those magical days with Nana and Grandad, touring around their country that gave Mabble such a magical feel. I certainly hope you can feel the magic in the place. I’m leaving you with some photos of Clovelly…
