I think Debra Webb’s Faces of Evil books just keep getting better and better.  Her latest, Vicious, came out at the end of November and has generated great buzz.  Once again, I’m honored to host a book club chat.

Without further ado, let’s talk about Vicious:

Serial killer Eric Spears is far from done. He has chosen his next victim and Deputy Chief Jess Harris knows it’s only a matter of time until he comes for her.

The murders are vicious, the killer relentless. Has Birmingham’s major crimes team run into its most baffling and deadly case yet?

Don’t miss the next thrilling installment of the Faces of Evil!

  1. What do you think of the connection between Ellis and Spears?
  1. How do you think Jess’s pregnancy is going to impact her and Dan’s relationship?  What about the relationship with her team?
  1. What do you think of Hayes?
  1. Chief Black, who’s side is he on?

Please respond in the comments.  Feel free to add any other questions you’d like to explore.

By the very nature of a book club discussion, the following will contain spoilers for Silence and all the previous Faces of Evil books.  Those that have been lucky enough to read Vicious in advance, please refrain from adding any events from that novel to the discussion.

Oh boy I am going to answer the questions backwards… I think chief Black is on his own side. He is looking to make a name for himself, even if it is at the expense of Dan. Hayes, I am having a hard time trying to figure him out. Is he a suck up? A spy? Or just someone who is looking out for himself? I don’t like that he is reporting to Dan behind Jess’ back, but I will hold my judgement for now.
The pregnancy I think is going to make dan even more protective of Jess. This may backfire on him. But if he takes his time in explaining and not telling Jess what to do, it will bring them closer.
Speers and Ellis.. a match made in hell. Still not sure how the two connected, but having two sociopaths is enough to leave goosebumps on me.

Interesting analysis, Dr. Linda!

I agree that Vicious is the best Faces of Evil yet. My favorite genre is Romantic Suspense and this series delivers. Aside from the suspense, there is wonderful love story between Jess and Dan. While Dan was a jerk to Jess twenty years ago, he has matured into an appealing man. Certainly, he is handsome, wealthy, and powerful. More importantly, he is a good but flawed man. Yes, he is over protective, but he would do anything for someone he truly loves, particularly Jess..

Dan lets his morals guide him. Without being a boy scout, he’s honest, sincere, loyal, and loving. Dan is the antithesis of Spears. Jess is very lucky. She has a second chance at love with a man worth keeping!

Love your insights, Marijane!

I really, really want to like Hayes, but there is something about him. I’m thinking it is either him or Black that’s the mole. Maybe both.

I think there is more to the Ellis and Spears connection. I hope this thread comes back in later books. I want to know more!

Excellent assessments, Toni!

Reading this has me convinced that I really need to start this series. Unfortunately, fixed income 1= book fixation = bad thing. However, I will be getting an Amazon gift card after the first of the year, so I know what I’ll be spending it on!

Debra Webb December 21, 2013 at 10:08 am

Thanks, Cindy!

Well, after reading all the reviews yesterday and reading this today, I HAVE TO start reading this series. Fixed income + severe book addiction = screwed. However, I know I’m getting an Amazon gift card after Jan. 1st and, now I know how I’m spending it!

With as many crazies as there out in the world, I’m not suprised that Ellis was a follower of Spears. Spears is gathering quite the fan club of psychos.

Jess’ pregnancy will draw her and Dan closer together but add quite a bit of stress to their relationship. Dan has always been protective of Jess to the point of being over-protective so I’m sure he will drive her totally nuts now. But, I think she is being a bit more cautious now because she knows she’s not only putting her life at risk but that of her unborn child. The way she handles things will be a bit different. I just hope Spears doesn’t know she is pregnant.

I’m not quite sure what to think of Hayes yet. I can’t tell if he is a good guy or has a hidden agenda. He is a complicated character that we are starting to see different sides of.

I’ve wondered if Chief Black isn’t one of Spear’s followers. We know there is a mole in the squad and I can’t help wondering if it is him. I don’t really care or him. He’s a little bit too obnoxious.

Love your thoughts, DeeAnn!
