I think most people I know realize that this isn’t a problem specific to California. Bring your own bags, or ask for paper if you must. We must curtail our dependance on all forms of plastic. Do you agree this is a problem? Or do you think I’m off my nut?

I agree. I don’t remember my shopping bags as often as I should. Used to be supermarkets on the west coast paid five cents a bag when you brought your own. Don’t think anyone is doing that anymore – at least not out here in New England.
There’s gotta be a better way. (Well in England it used to be that everyone had to bring their own bags because they didn’t supply them at the store. Don’t know if that’s the case anymore.)
I love that DC now has a 5cent “tax” on plastic bags. It encourages people to bring their own but still allows for plastic bags in case you forget to grab yours or don’t grab enough. And the money is used to clean up the bag debris. Completely sensible win in my book.
